Can I delete my chats in Flint?

School owners can permanently delete a chat. Others archive instead — how each option works, and how to request data removal.

Updated October 12, 2026

Deleting a chat is reserved for school owners, and it is permanent. Most school owners are admins; a teacher-labelled person who created the school can also hold ownership. Ordinary teachers and students archive instead: the chat disappears from their list but can still be opened later. Creating or editing a chat alone does not grant deletion rights.

The sharing and archive steps below describe personal chats. Other people's direct class chats are view-only, even for school owners: school ownership alone does not let you archive or delete those chats.

What happensThe chat leaves your chat list but is keptThe chat is removed permanently
Can it come back?Yes — use My archived chats for chats you started, or Search or a retained link for shared chatsNo — this action cannot be undone
Who can do itThe person who started the chat, or anyone they gave Can editSchool owners — normally admins, also teacher-labelled school creators

Sessions inside an activity work the same way — see Archiving and deleting sessions.

Archive a chat

  1. Open the chat, click the ⋯ More actions menu at the top of the page, and choose Archive. (From the sidebar you can also click the ⋯ next to the chat and choose Archive chat.)
  2. Type Archive to enable the Yes button, then click Yes.

The chat leaves your chat list. For a chat you started, open My profile from your name in the sidebar, go to the Chats tab, and switch the filter to My archived chats in the selected term. That list only contains chats you created. For another person's chat you can edit, use Search or the retained chat link. Archived chats also turn up in Search, at the bottom of the results. See How to view archived chats and sessions.

Archiving does not hide the chat from your school. Admins can still find it, and it stays in moderation records.

Delete a chat

Deleting requires school ownership, and it cannot be undone.

  1. Open the chat, click the ⋯ More actions menu at the top of the page, and choose Delete. (From the sidebar you can also click the ⋯ next to the chat and choose Delete chat.)
  2. Type Delete to enable the Yes button, then click Yes.

Deleting also stops shared links to documents, slides and other artifacts generated in the chat from working. Archive instead if those links need to remain available. Copies published to a library are separate and keep working.

Why deletion is limited to school owners

Flint is used in schools, where student conversations with AI are subject to educator oversight, safety policies and record-keeping rules. Keeping chat history lets teachers and admins review AI use and moderation concerns. Limiting permanent deletion to school owners gives the school control over removing those records.

Requesting data removal for compliance reasons

If your school has a compliance or legal reason to have a person's data removed from Flint, such as a GDPR or FERPA request, contact our support team. Include:

  • The name and email address of the student or staff member whose data needs to be removed.
  • Your school's name.
  • The legal basis for the request (for example, a GDPR Article 17 right to erasure, or a FERPA request from a parent).

To reach support, click Learn more about Flint at the bottom of the sidebar, then Help, and select an available contact option from the help home. If the messenger is unavailable or functional cookie consent is off, Help opens the public help center instead. You can also email support@flintk12.com.
