Profile onboarding: what replaced it

New role and intent questions are separate from the retired profile questionnaire. Use memories to update grade levels, subjects and goals.

Updated October 30, 2026

Flint used to ask you a short set of questions when you created your account — the grade levels you teach, and your goals for using Flint — and kept the answers on your profile as "onboarding answers".

That profile questionnaire is gone. Sparky now picks the same things up as you work, and keeps them as memories. Existing grade-level, subject and goal answers were migrated into memories where applicable. This does not mean Flint has stopped asking all onboarding questions.

The current signup questions

When you are eligible to create a school and have no school to join — or choose I don't see my school — Flint asks a few questions and then sets up your own workspace, named {your first name}'s Workspace:

  1. What best describes you? Choose Teacher, Administrator, Student or Other. Other also asks you to describe yourself.
  2. The terms. Tick I agree to the Terms and conditions and have read the Privacy policy. and click Accept and continue. Students see the rules in plain words.
  3. What would you like to use Flint for? Only administrators and students get this question. Administrators choose Use AI for myself or Bring AI to my school. Students choose I have a join code from my teacher, which opens the code entry and creates no workspace, or I want to use Flint for learning.
  4. Which school? Flint asks which school you teach at, work at or go to. Your answer doesn't change your workspace's name.
  5. Your first class. Teachers then answer Let's set up your first class! What class do you teach? Type a class name and click Create class. Flint creates the class and opens its Overview page.

If you told the AI literacy course which class you teach, Flint fills in that class name and asks whether to start with it.

If your school or city isn't listed

Flint guesses your school from your email address. If it names your school and asks whether you teach, work or study there, answer Yes. If it found your district, search that district's schools, or click My school isn't in the district to search everywhere.

  1. Type your school's name in the search box.
  2. If it isn't in the results, choose Use "{the name you typed}" as my school.
  3. Under Which city is your school in?, search for the city and pick it. If the city isn't listed either, choose Use "{the name you typed}" as the city.
  4. Click Continue.

The question for older free-school creators

Some existing free-school creators who were originally labelled administrators must answer a separate prompt before continuing. It asks one question, What best describes you? Choose Teacher, Administrator, Student or Other. Other also asks you to describe yourself. When you click Continue, Flint opens your school. The prompt no longer asks what you mainly use Flint for.

Your answer helps Flint choose its suggestions and, when applicable, sets your school-role label. School ownership is separate: a creator who chooses Teacher keeps school-management rights. Student owners have a restricted Admin sidebar with General and People, not the full school-settings pages. See Roles in Flint.

Signup that creates a school saves a Profile memory there summarising your role and intent. The existing-creator prompt also saves one if the school still exists, recording only your role; the student join-code signup branch does not. The questions do not restore the old editable profile questionnaire.

Tell Sparky about your grade levels and goals

The simplest way is to say it in a chat. For example:

  • "Remember that I teach 10th grade IB World History."
  • "Remember that my goal this year is to get students writing more evidence-based arguments."

Sparky confirms when it has saved the memory, and uses it in future chats and activities. See Memories in Flint for what Sparky does and doesn't remember, and how to remove a memory you don't want.

Where to see and change them

Memories are separate for each school. Select the school whose memories you want to see before opening your profile settings.

  1. Click your name at the bottom of the left sidebar.
  2. Click My profile.
  3. Click Profile settings.
  4. Open the Memories tab.

Each memory shows its Category and Content. To remove one, click the delete button on it and then click Save.

You cannot edit or add memories in this tab. To update one, ask Sparky in a chat in that school: "Update my memory: I now teach 8th grade instead of 5th grade."

The walkthrough below updates a teaching detail through chat and reviews the school-scoped memory.

Add a note about yourself

The General tab of your profile settings also has an About me field. It's a free-text description that appears on your profile, so colleagues can see who you are and what you teach.
