Seeing your students' chats

Where teachers and admins find the chats students have with Sparky: chats from the Home page, chats in a class, and activity sessions.

Updated October 29, 2026

Flint keeps every chat a student has with Sparky, and teachers and admins can read them. Where a chat shows up depends on where the student started it, and who can open it depends on your access.

In this article, "school admins" means people with Can edit on the term, which Flint normally gives to anyone with the Admin school role. See Roles in Flint.

Chats a student started from Home

These chats belong to the term, not to a class, so they never appear in a class's chat list.

  1. Click Search in the sidebar.
  2. Type the student's name and pick them under People.
  3. Open the Chats tab on their profile.

You can also open a student's profile from Admin › Settings › People.

The Chats tab lists only chats started from Home. A student who has only chatted inside classes or activities shows No chats yet. here, with "hasn't started any chats visible to you" underneath. Their other chats are in the class and the activity.

Chats a student started in a class

  1. Open the class.
  2. Click Chats in the class sidebar.
  3. Under Chats, click My recent chats. Choose All other people to see everyone else's chats in the class, or type a student's name under Search for a person to see only theirs.

You need Can edit on the class to switch away from My recent chats. Without it, the class sidebar lists only your own chats.

Chats inside an activity

A student's chat in an activity is a session.

  1. Open the activity.
  2. Scroll to the Sessions table and click a student's row to read their conversation.

The student's profile also lists their sessions on its Sessions tab. For live alerts while students work, see Monitoring live progress during activity sessions.

Find any chat in the school

School admins can find any chat or session through Search in the sidebar. Chats and sessions have their own sections near the bottom of the results. Click See all chat results or See all session results to expand one.

A student can share a chat with you. When Sparky flags a message, the moderation alert email links straight to the chat, and moderators can open it from that link. See Moderation in Flint.
