What's an AI role, and how can I change it on Flint?

Flint has one AI, Sparky. Instead of switching between personas, you give Sparky a role in a Lesson with Sparky activity.

Updated October 13, 2026

Flint no longer has a list of AI personas to pick between. There is one AI — Sparky — and you tell it who to be in a Lesson with Sparky activity. Anyone who can edit that activity can do this; you don't need an administrator.

Give Sparky a role in an activity

The steps below are for Lesson with Sparky. File Upload and Test or Quiz do not have an Activity behavior section or a Sparky's role field.

  1. Open the activity and click Edit activity.
  2. Click the activity thumbnail, select Activity settings, then expand Activity behavior.
  3. In Sparky's role, write who Sparky is playing in one line — "Mock interviewer for an engineering internship", "Socratic debate partner", "Waiter in a Paris café".
  4. Fill in the detail in Guidelines for Sparky: what Sparky should ask, what it should refuse to do, when to break character.
  5. Click Update activity.

You can do the same thing by asking. In the builder conversation, say "act as a mock interviewer for an engineering internship and stay in character", and Sparky writes the role and guidelines for you.

Because the role belongs to the activity, one class can hold several activities with completely different characters.

Outside an activity

A plain chat is always with Sparky itself. To get something more specialised, open Tools in the sidebar and pick a tool to start a new chat with a preset task and greeting. Picking a tool does not change an existing chat's role. Students see student tools; teachers and admins can also use teacher tools.

For what Sparky can make and do inside a chat, see Tools available when chatting with Sparky.

For everything else you can change about an activity's behavior, see Changing the behavior of an existing activity.
