Flint used to ask you a short set of questions when you created your account — the grade levels you teach, and your goals for using Flint — and kept the answers on your profile as "onboarding answers".
That profile questionnaire is gone. Sparky now picks the same things up as you work, and keeps them as memories. Existing grade-level, subject and goal answers were migrated into memories where applicable. This does not mean Flint has stopped asking all onboarding questions.
The current role and intent questions
When you are eligible to create a school and have no school to join — or choose I don't see my school — Flint asks What best describes you? Choose Teacher, Administrator, Student or Other. Other also asks you to describe yourself. The next question, What would you like to use Flint for?, offers choices suited to your role.
A student can choose I have a join code from my teacher to enter that code, or I want to use Flint for learning to create a personal free school where signup eligibility permits. Educators can choose personal work, classroom or school use, or Build my AI literacy where the course is available. The course is available on the US deployment, not the UK deployment.
Some existing free-school creators who were originally labelled administrators must answer a separate prompt before continuing. It asks What best describes you? and, for non-student answers, What do you mainly use Flint for? The AI-literacy option is omitted if the course is unavailable or you have already started it.
These answers help Flint choose its suggestions and, when applicable, set your school-role label. School ownership is separate: a creator who chooses Teacher keeps school-management rights. Student owners have a restricted Admin sidebar with General and People, not the full school-settings pages. See Roles in Flint.
Signup that creates a school saves a Profile memory there summarising your role and intent. The existing-creator prompt also saves one if the school still exists; the student join-code signup branch does not. The questions do not restore the old editable profile questionnaire.
Tell Sparky about your grade levels and goals
The simplest way is to say it in a chat. For example:
- "Remember that I teach 10th grade IB World History."
- "Remember that my goal this year is to get students writing more evidence-based arguments."
Sparky confirms when it has saved the memory, and uses it in future chats and activities. See Memories in Flint for what Sparky does and doesn't remember, and how to remove a memory you don't want.
Where to see and change them
Memories are separate for each school. Select the school whose memories you want to see before opening your profile settings.
- Click your name at the bottom of the left sidebar.
- Click My profile.
- Click Profile settings.
- Open the Memories tab.
Each memory shows its Category and Content. To remove one, click the delete button on it and then click Save.
You cannot edit or add memories in this tab. To update one, ask Sparky in a chat in that school: "Update my memory: I now teach 8th grade instead of 5th grade."
The walkthrough below updates a teaching detail through chat and reviews the school-scoped memory.
Add a note about yourself
The General tab of your profile settings also has an About me field. It's a free-text description that appears on your profile, so colleagues can see who you are and what you teach.
