This recording announced speaking activities in 2023, so the interface in it is not the one you will see today — the written steps below and in the linked articles are current.
Sparky can listen to students and speak back to them. The activity's language settings guide speaking and listening. The language pickers offer more than 800 language and region options, but that list is not a guarantee of speech support for every option.
Flint uses OpenAI for speech. OpenAI's text-to-speech documentation lists supported output languages, including Spanish and French, and notes that voices are optimized for English. Before assigning a speaking activity, try both student speech input and Sparky's spoken replies in your chosen language.
For a Lesson with Sparky, open Edit activity, click the activity thumbnail, select Activity settings, then expand Language. Test or Quiz and File Upload do not have this section:
- Primary language — the language Sparky works in. Secondary language(s) adds others on top.
- Students' communication — whether students write, speak, or may do either.
- Sparky's communication — whether Sparky writes, speaks, or both.
Where to go next:
- How to enable speech-to-text and text-to-speech — turning speaking and listening on for an activity.
- What languages does Flint support? — the full list of options, and how to set them.
- How to customize Sparky's voice — which voice Sparky uses and how fast it talks.
