In Flint, there are three types of user roles: admins, teachers, and students. These roles are set by the workspace admin. If you believe your role needs to be changed, please send this guide to your administrator. You can copy the link for it below:

Why change user roles?

It's important to make sure your students and teachers are labeled with the correct roles in Flint. This is how Flint will know how to treat them—being more helpful to teachers and acting like a responsible teaching assistant to students. This guide will show how to change roles in bulk and individually.

How to assign roles

Any admin of a workspace can assign and edit roles. There are four different ways to assign these roles:

LMS/SIS Rostering

If your school is completely new to Flint, the quickest way to assign roles is through a rostering integration with your LMS or SIS provider. Here is a guide on that.

Users with no role assigned can be assigned roles if their roles are included in a new import. However, roles that you have assigned manually will not be overridden by future imports.

How to bulk add and assign individual emails

  1. Click "Settings and Members" on the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Click "Members" at on the left sidebar.

  3. Click "Add members."

  4. Enter email addresses separated by commas, spaces, or new lines.

  5. Click "Next."

  6. You now have two options:

How to individually assign each member their role

This option is best for when they each have different roles (e.g. one member is a student, the other a teacher).

  1. Click the white box to the right of each members name. The box should currently say "Unassigned."

  2. Choose the role you want to assign the member.

  3. Click "Add."

  4. Click "Save" on the upper right hand side of your screen.

How to bulk assign all members to be the same role

A great use case for this would be if you added a list of student emails, and you want to all assign them as students.

  1. Click the blue "Add (X unassigned) as" button on the bottom righthand side.

  2. Choose the role you want to assign all members. Once you choose, you'll be automatically taken back to the member dashboard.

  3. Click "Save" on the upper right hand side of your screen.

How to bulk add and assign with CSV upload

  1. Click "Settings and Members" on the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Click "Members" at on the left sidebar.

  3. Click "Add members."

  4. Click "Upload CSV." *Note: you must have two columns in your CSV file titled "Email" and "Role."

How to bulk add and assign users by email domain

With the "add domain" option, anyone with an email address at the specific domain will be able to join with the assigned role. Please note that this option only permits bulk assigning, meaning that anyone with the domain you add will all have the same role.

  1. Click "Settings and Members" on the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Click "Members" at on the left sidebar.

  3. Click "Add domain," which you can find to the right of your screen.

  4. Add the domain.

  5. Click the blue "Add as" button.

  6. Chose the role you want to assign to all members with said domain. If you would like to assign them different roles, you can choose "Unassigned," then reassign their roles afterwards.

How to change roles

There are two main ways you can change member roles:

How to assign unassigned roles

Some members of your workspace might not have their role assigned. Unassigned roles will be treated like students until you designate them otherwise.

  1. Click "Settings and Members" on the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Click "Members" at on the left sidebar.

  3. Click "Unassigned." You'll now see a filtered list of members that haven't been assigned a role.

  4. Click the white box to the right of each members name. It should currently say "Unassigned."

  5. Assign them a new role.

After assigning them a role, the member will be removed from the "Unassigned" view. You can double check they have been assigned the correct role by clicking the respective toggle filter.

How to change individual member roles

  1. Click "Settings and Members" on the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Click "Members" at on the left sidebar.

  3. Find the member whose role you want to change. You can do this through:

    1. The search bar

    2. Scrolling through all members

    3. Using a filtered view and then scrolling to find the member

  4. Click on the white dropdown box in the third column. It will be populated with either "Admin," "Student," "Teacher," or "Unassigned."

  5. Choose the new role you want to assign the member.

How to bulk change member roles

Bulk changing member roles can be helpful when you have a large group of members you want to switch from one role to another.

  1. Click "Settings and Members" on the bottom left of your screen.

  2. Click "Members" at on the left sidebar.

  3. You have two bulk changing options: changing all roles in a filtered view, or selecting multiple members to bulk change roles.

How to change all roles in a filtered view

  1. Choose the filter view (e.g to change all unassigned roles to be students, you should choose the "Unassigned" view). To bulk change everyone's role, remain on the "All" filter view, which is the default.

  2. Click the checkbox to the left of "Name" (the first column of the member dashboard). This selects every member under that view.

  3. Click the "Change role to" button.

  4. Choose the role you want to change to.

How to select multiple members to bulk change roles

  1. Use the search bar or filter view to easily find the members whose roles you wish to change.

  2. Find the checkbox to the left of their name.

  3. Select the checkbox.

  4. Repeat the process for as many members as you would like.

  5. Click the "Change role to" button.

  6. Choose the role you want to change to.
